Following the Championship play-off clash between Leeds United and Norwich, police arrested two fans after a man was reportedly ‘slashed’.
The incident occurred outside Carrow Road following the 0-0 draw between the two teams. Both the police and the club have confirmed that the victim received treatment, and the arrests were made in connection with the attack.
In a recent statement, Norfolk Police said: “Two men have been arrested following an incident in Norwich this afternoon. A man aged in his 60s reported being punched outside Norwich City FC’s stadium on Carrow Road.
An object is also believed to have been thrown at the victim, who suffered a cut to his chin.
The victim was seen by paramedics at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.
“A man aged in his late teens was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting GBH and taken to the Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
A man aged 50 was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.”
Violence at football matches is unfortunately not uncommon, especially when so much is at stake, as was the case with the Leeds and Norwich match.
Such behaviour, which endangers lives, should never be tolerated. Increased police presence in recent years has been one measure taken to address these issues off the pitch.
The two teams will face off in the second leg at Elland Road on Thursday night to determine who will advance to the final at Wembley.
Despite finishing 17 points ahead of Norwich in the league standings, Leeds could see their season come to an end at the hands of the East Anglian side.
