Following the heartbreaking loss of Nigerian actor Junior Pope in a boat accident during a movie shoot, concerns over safety have been reignited after an old video featuring Ghanaian actor John Dumelo refusing to join a risky canoe scene resurfaced.
On April 10, 2024, Junior Pope and three crew members lost their lives when a boat capsized during filming at the River Niger Cable Point Asaba.
His final social media post captured him on the speeding boat, acknowledging the dangers of the trip without a life jacket.
In the wake of this tragedy, attention has turned to a past incident involving John Dumelo, who declined to participate in a scene due to safety worries.
Despite efforts to reassure him, Dumelo stood firm, highlighting the hazards faced by actors during shoots.
The incident has sparked discussions on social media about the safety protocols and working conditions within the entertainment industry.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has responded by suspending all film productions involving boat rides indefinitely, emphasizing the need for stricter safety measures moving forward.
“Following the tragic incident of a boat mishap that claimed the life of Junior Pope and three other crew members at the waterside of the River Niger Cable Point Asaba on 10th of April, all films that involve riverine areas and boat riding are hereby suspended indefinitely.
“No shoot on all locations nationwide on Thursday, 11th April 2024, and the film titled ‘The Other Side of Life’ is suspended indefinitely.
“Also, no actor is allowed to work with Adamma Luke as a producer till further notice, while we keep searching for the bodies of the remaining persons,” President of AGN, Emeka Rollas, said in a statement.
