Police have apprehended four individuals for violating electoral rules by capturing their votes using phones during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary primary in the Odododiodioo constituency.
NDC Chairman Paul Laryea confirmed the arrests, noting that despite the Electoral Commission’s (EC) explicit warning against photographing ballots, these individuals proceeded to do so.
Mr Laryea emphasized that the four individuals are currently in police custody.
In the Greater Accra Region, over 2300 NDC delegates are casting their votes to choose a Parliamentary Candidate for the Odododiodioo constituency.
This follows the dismissal of an interlocutory injunction application by disqualified candidate Michael Nii Yarboi Anan, leading to the party’s initial indefinite postponement of the election.
Background:
In November 2023, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC disqualified Michael Nii Yarboi Annan from the parliamentary election in the Odododiodioo Constituency.
The party cited findings by a special committee, stating that Mr. Annan did not meet the qualification criteria outlined in Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution.
This article requires a member to be an active party member at the constituency level for the four years preceding the nomination date.
Due to a court injunction obtained by the disqualified candidate, the party initially postponed the primary in the Odododiodioo constituency indefinitely. However, with the court injunction dismissed, the party has now cleared the way for the primary to proceed.
