Former General Secretary of the People National Convention PNC, Atik Mohammed has criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regarding his refusal to approve the  Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill passed by Parliament.

Atik Mohammed advised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take action despite a delay in assent due to a Supreme Court challenge.

The bill, aimed at curbing homosexual practices with penalties of six months to five years imprisonment for offenders, is awaiting the President’s assent to become law.

However, President Akufo-Addo has cited an ongoing legal challenge in the Supreme Court as the reason for postponing his assent.

The President emphasized the need to await the court’s decision before making any further move, asserting, “The operation of the institutions of the Ghanaian state will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in our country.”

Additionally, the Office of the President has written to Parliament, advising them not to transmit the bill for assent until the Supreme Court addresses the pending legal matters.

The letter highlighted two applications for an order of interlocutory injunction filed in the Supreme Court, urging Parliament to refrain from transmitting the bill until the court reaches a final determination.

Atik Mohammed reacted to the President’s lack of action by asserting that the President must take a proactive stance, or else the New Patriotic Party’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 elections will be jeopardised.

“Akufo-Addo should take passing of the antiLDBTQ+ bill seriously or the chances of the NPP winning the 2024 elections will be impossible, he must pass the bill inorder not to have any repercussions,” Atik Mohammed stated.

Atik Mohammed’s caution comes amidst a complex legal landscape surrounding the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, underscoring the ongoing debate and legal challenges surrounding the legislation.
