A taxi driver, in a shocking incident yesterday morning between 7:00 am – 8:00 am in Agona Swedru in the Central Region, is currently on the run after he struck and dragged a police officer named Opare Ernest, who was directing traffic.
The incident, according to UTV reporter Sylvester Awuah Brobbey, occurred near the Agona Swedru Chapel Square, close to the chief’s palace, where police personnel were deployed to provide security for an ongoing event.
Narrating the incident on UTV’s Adekye Nsroma, Brobbey said, Opare Ernest was directing traffic to manage heavy congestion when a taxi driver deviated from the designated route, hitting the police officer and dragging him for a considerable distance.
The taxi eventually came to a halt after plunging into a gutter, with the injured officer still trapped under the vehicle.
Quick to respond, other police officers providing security rushed to the scene, successfully extricating their colleague from under the taxi. The injured officer was promptly transported to the hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for severe injuries sustained during the incident.
The fleeing taxi driver abandoned his vehicle, with the registration number GW6086-22, a Hyundai I10, at the scene. Despite an extensive search conducted throughout the day, the driver remained elusive. The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the hit-and-run driver.
The police officer’s uniform was torn into pieces during the harrowing incident, highlighting the severity of the injuries sustained. Authorities continue their efforts to locate and apprehend the driver responsible for this alarming hit-and-run.
