Former Deputy Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Rachel Appoh, has opted out of the National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary primaries for the Gomoa Central constituency.
Formerly, the constituency’s lawmaker, Rachel Appoh, had previously expressed her intention to contest in the primaries leading up to the 2024 elections. However, on her birthday, October 6, 2023, she issued a statement on her social media platforms announcing her withdrawal from the race.
In her statement, Rachel Appoh described the situation as regrettable and explained that her decision was reached after consultations with her family and healthcare professionals.
She cited her involvement in three road accidents in the past ten months as the reason behind her withdrawal.
These accidents have left her in a condition where actively participating in a re-election campaign would have a detrimental impact on her health.
“It saddens my heart that the 6th of October, 2023, is the day for the opening of nominations for NDC Parliamentary Primaries in Gomoa Central Constituency and also doubles as my birthday. I was intrigued to contest but it’s unfortunate that for the past eight (8 ) to ten (10) months I have had three accidents that nearly took my life.
“Looking at the current challenges battling my health, the doctors advise that I cannot contest for the upcoming (primaries) elections,” she stated.
Rachel Appoh extended her heartfelt appreciation to the constituency executives and delegates for their backing and urged for a fair campaign leading up to the primaries.
In emphasising the importance of unity among the NDC members, Rachel Appoh stressed that the primary objective should be to seize power from the NPP in 2024.
She called for the avoidance of any actions that might sow discord within the party.
Furthermore, she pledged her unwavering and steadfast dedication and support to whomever is chosen as the candidate to contest and win the 2024 elections.
“As I celebrate my birthday today, I wish all Women a happy pink anniversary and urge you to screen your breasts since my birth month October is the breast Cancer Awareness month.”
Meanwhile, the NDC has released the roadmap for elections to be held in some constituencies that could not hold their owing to myriad factors.
Per the document sighted, the elections will be held on October 28, 2023.
