At least 40 people died when a tunnel collapsed in a gold mine in Mali, according to officials.

“It began with a sound. ” “The ground started to shake,” said Oumar Sidibe, a local official for gold miners, to the AFP news agency.

A tunnel in the south-western Koulikoro region collapsed on Friday, but the number of deaths is not known yet.

According to officials, over 70 people have passed away.

Mr Sidibe said that there were more than 200 people mining for gold in the field. The search is finished. We found 73 dead people.

The Mining ministry spokesperson Baye Coulibaly told Reuters news agency that more than 40 people have died.

Mali’s government said they are very sorry for the families who are sad and for the people of Mali.

It also told people living near mines to follow safety rules and only pan for gold in designated areas.

Mining accidents happen a lot because many miners don’t follow safety rules when they’re digging for gold.

Mr Coulibaly said that the government told miners not to dig unauthorized tunnels, but they didn’t listen.

The government said they will look into what happened and send a group to the area on Thursday.

Mali sells a lot of gold to other countries.
