Memphis Depay and Jeremie Frimpong attempt ‘Adowa’ dance after scoring for Holland

Memphis Depay and Jeremie Frimpong, both of Ghanaian descent, showcased their heritage by performing the popular Ghanaian dance ‘Adowa’ after Depay scored in the Netherlands’ warm-up game against Canada.

The duo, who chose to represent the Dutch national team, are gearing up for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

In their penultimate preparatory match before the tournament, the Oranje faced Canada and dominated the game from the start.

Despite a frustrating first half, Ronald Koeman’s men broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half. Frimpong delivered a delightful cross into the box, which Depay met with a clinical finish.

While the goal itself was routine, the celebration that followed stole the show. Depay ran to Frimpong, and together, they performed a dance that resonated with their Ghanaian roots. Depay’s dance involved fluid arm movements from right to left, followed by a reverent gesture of tapping his chest.

Seven minutes after Depay’s goal, Frimpong scored the second goal, contributing to the Netherlands’ resounding 4-0 victory in preparation for the upcoming Euros.

The celebration not only showcased the players’ pride in their heritage but also added a cultural touch to the game, highlighting the diversity and inclusivity in football.
