Meet the 27-year-old Zaila Alhassan breaking the gender bias in welding industry

Alhassan Zaila Tiyumba, a 27-year-old entrepreneur, is defying gender norms and breaking barriers in Ghana. Her journey to success is one of resilience and determination.

Starting with a cosmetics and soap-making business, Zaila sought to expand her skills and opportunities. Despite facing rejection in the northern region due to her gender, she refused to be deterred.

“The people in the Northern Region didn’t want to accept me because I am a female. They didn’t even test me. They said our work is very hard. We cannot take you, it is not for women,” she shared.

She made the bold decision to move to the Greater Accra Region, where she found a mentor in Samuel Kwame Lartey, who has been training her in welding for the past six months.

Samuel recognized Zaila’s potential and determination, stating, “She has gone to school. I can’t sack her. Maybe that is her talent. If I drive her away, it could have a lot of implications for the future. So we have decided to test her to see if she can really do the work.”

Zaila’s story is not just about learning a new skill; it’s about challenging stereotypes and paving the way for other women in male-dominated fields. “The world is moving forward,” she says, “and I have the idea to make a positive impact. I also like the fact that I will be able to work in a male-dominated field where I can challenge the status quo, breaking barriers for women.”
