Former England captain ,Steph Houghton has announced her retirement from professional football at the end of this season.
Over her 20-year career, she has played for four different clubs, including Sunderland, Leeds United, Arsenal, and Manchester City, winning a total of 16 domestic trophies.
Houghton, 35, has represented England 121 times and captained the team at three major tournaments, as well as competing for Team GB at two Olympics.
Despite missing out on the 2022 Euros due to injury, her illustrious career includes three Women’s Super League titles and numerous accolades.
Announcing her decision on social media, Houghton said: “There is no easy way to say it, but I am retiring from football at the end of the current WSL season.
“Taking the decision to retire, is such a difficult thing to do. Whilst age comes to every player, it makes it no easier having to say the words out loud. Football has been my life; my passion and I have loved the career I have had.”
