Luis Diaz, the Colombian forward, displayed remarkable mental strength, overcoming the ordeal of his father’s kidnapping.
Liverpool managed a late comeback, securing a 1-1 draw against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
Liverpool squandered 23 goal-scoring opportunities, with Darwin Nunez having an unfortunate evening, including a glaring open-goal miss.
Luton seemed to take advantage of Liverpool’s wastefulness when former Manchester United youth player Tahith Chong scored from a sharp counter-attack with 10 minutes left.
In response, Luis Diaz was substituted onto the pitch, and in the fifth minute of injury time, he rewarded his manager’s trust by scoring a header from Harvey Elliott’s cross.
Diaz celebrated the goal by revealing an undershirt bearing the message “Freedom for Papa,” in reference to his father’s kidnapping in Colombia.
The Brazilian had a quiet first half but commanded his area well to collect crosses in the second. Could do nothing about the Luton goal.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (7/10):
Once again, he dazzled with passing vision and technique and was unlucky not to get an assist when Nunez smacked the crossbar after latching onto his superb through ball. Struggled to contain Chiedozie Ogbene.
Ibrahima Konate (6/10):
I made a few silly fouls in the first half but escaped a booking. I came close with a late header.
Virgil van Dijk (6/10):
Little to do defensively and made himself a nuisance by attacking set pieces. Caught up the pitch when Luton countered and scored.
Joe Gomez (6/10):
I didn’t really put a foot wrong but I contributed little to the attack. Withdrawn for Tsimikas with 25 minutes left.
