Libya announces state of emergency as Storm Daniel kills 150 people

At least 150 people have lost their lives due to a strong storm that caused serious flooding in eastern Libya, according to an official.

Storm Daniel arrived in the North African country recently, causing the government to declare a state of extreme emergency. Last week, it caused the death of twelve individuals in Europe.

Seven soldiers from the Libyan army are currently missing while trying to save people.

Authorities in the eastern part of Libya have set a rule that everyone must stay indoors during a specific time, and they have also told schools and stores to shut down.

At least 150 people died because of heavy rains and flooding caused by storm Daniel. These deaths occurred in Derna, the Jabal al-Akhdar region, and the suburbs of Al-Marj. This information was shared by Mohamed Massoud, a spokesperson for the Benghazi-based administration in Libya, with the French news agency AFP.

The storm named Daniel has caused problems in the cities of Benghazi and Sousse in the east. It has also affected Derna and Al-Marj.

The city of Misrata in the west also experienced the floods.

There are videos of the storm going around online, but we’re not sure if they’re true. One of the videos shows a lot of floodwater taking a man away. Other videos show drivers stuck on the tops of their cars.

In addition to schools and stores, four big oil ports shut down due to the storm.

The leader of the rival government in Tripoli, Abdulhamid Dbeiba, said he has told government agencies to quickly address the damage and floods caused by the storm. The United Nations in Libya is closely monitoring the situation and will help with relief efforts at the local and national level.

Since 2014, after the death of its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been split into two different governments that are competing for power.

Last week, a strong storm named Daniel hit Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria, causing the death of over twelve individuals.

It will arrive in western Egypt on Monday.

Climate scientists are saying that because of global warming, there will be more water evaporating in the summer, which will cause stronger storms.
