Liar! No case has been filed in the Supreme Court Sammy Gyamfi ‘exposes’ Akufo-Addo on anti-LGBT+ Bill

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi, criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his stance on approving the anti-LGBT+ Bill.

Gyamfi disputed the accuracy of the president’s statement regarding the timing of a lawsuit filed at the Supreme Court.

While President Akufo-Addo mentioned that a suit was filed on Monday, March 4, Gyamfi pointed out that the filing actually occurred on Tuesday, March 5.

President Akufo-Addo had previously stated, in a statement dated Monday, March 4, that he would decide on the anti-gay bill’s approval after addressing all associated matters, including those yet to be brought to his attention.

He cited a lawsuit filed by a private individual challenging the bill’s constitutionality as a reason for the delay in his decision-making process.

However, according to Gyamfi, the president’s assertion is inaccurate.

“Why did the President lie to the nation and international community yesterday, that a suit had been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill when he knew that to be false?” he questioned.

He continued to accuse the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of orchestrating the suit aimed at providing a pretext for President Akufo-Addo to delay assenting to the bill.

“This legal action is nothing but an NPP-sponsored suit, calculated to serve as a convenient excuse for the President to refuse to assent the Bill on Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values,” he added.

“The NPP pretended to support the anti-LGBTQI Bill in the open, only to stab the Christian community, the Muslim community, traditional authorities, and Ghanaians at large, in the back.

“Shame on President @NAkufoAddo, his complicit Vice, Alhaji @MBawumia and the entire NPP, for toying with the values of our nation and the future of our children. The scales are off. Ghanaians now know who the real gay lobbyists are,” he added.

Renowned Ghanaian journalist Richard Sky made a significant move by submitting a motion to the Supreme Court on March 5. In this motion, he urged the president to abstain from approving the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2024.

Richard Sky’s motion outlines multiple reliefs sought, all of which are based on constitutional provisions and fundamental rights. These reliefs include declarations asserting that the bill’s passage by parliament violated various articles of the constitution, thereby rendering it null, void, and ineffective.

As can be seen on the face of the writ, the suit challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill was filed in the Supreme Court of Ghana today, March 5, 2024, at about 1 pm.

This begs the question of how President Akufo-Addo could refer to the suit in his speech yesterday when the same was filed only today.

How did President Akufo-Addo know, as of yesterday, that the suit had already been filed at the Supreme Court, when the same was filed only today?
