Under Xavi’s guidance, Barcelona maintained their flawless record against Atlético Madrid with a 1-0 triumph, securing crucial points in their pursuit of retaining the La Liga title.

Both teams, eager to keep pace with Real Madrid and Girona at the summit, engaged in an early exchange of attacks.

The visitors initiated the action with Nahuel Molina’s shot cleared off the line by Ronald Araújo.

Barcelona swiftly responded, missing a golden opportunity as Robert Lewandowski, unusually off target, headed wide from six yards.

Lewandowski continued to struggle with accuracy, squandering another chance by blasting wide from Jules Koundé’s precise delivery. However, Barcelona didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough.

João Félix, once cast aside by former manager Diego Simeone, found redemption by delicately lobbing the ball into the net, providing Barcelona with a well-deserved lead.

Félix’s goal triggered a memorable celebration in front of the Atlético fans, but it failed to ignite a strong response from the visitors. Despite the setback, Barcelona’s performance under Xavi showcased their determination and effectiveness in securing a crucial victory.

Barcelona’s strategic celebration indeed had the intended impact, as they emerged after the break with a clear intent to add a second goal and seal the game. Their pursuit nearly materialised before the hour mark when Raphinha’s strike hit the post.

Simeone’s discontent was evident, as he utilised all five substitutions by the 66th minute. Unfortunately, the players introduced, including former Barça player Memphis Depay, failed to have the desired effect.

Depay made a valiant effort, particularly with a powerful free-kick aimed for the top corner. However, a remarkable save by Iñaki Peña Sotorres tipped the ball onto the woodwork, preventing an equaliser.

This proved to be the closest Los Colchoneros came to levelling the score. Barcelona held firm, securing three crucial points that kept them in close contention with the top two teams.

Atlético, despite the setback, remains in the mix, holding a trump card with a game in hand.
