Israel-Gaza war: US requests brief truce in UN document

The United States is seeking a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, and is urging the UN Security Council to support this.

It also told Israel not to attack the crowded city of Rafah.

The US used to not say “stop fighting” during UN votes on the war, but President Joe Biden has said similar things.

The US is going to reject a new proposal from Algeria that asks for a quick ceasefire to help people in need.

Over a million Palestinians who had to leave their homes now live in Rafah, which is half of Gaza’s population.

Before the war, only 250,000 people lived in the southern city near Egypt.

Many people who have been forced from their homes are living in temporary shelters or tents in very dirty and unhealthy conditions, with little access to clean water or food.

The UN has warned that an Israeli attack in the city might cause a lot of people to be killed.

Israel started fighting in Gaza after Hamas gunmen attacked southern Israel on 7 October. The attack caused about 1,200 people to die and more than 240 people to be taken captive.

According to the health ministry in the Palestinian territory, 29,000 people have been killed by the Israeli military campaign.

Many countries are telling the US to stop Israel from its very damaging attacks. The US has been supporting Israel’s right to defend itself during the war.

It said it will stop the Algerian plan, but its own text does show that it doesn’t agree with Israel’s plans.

Discussions will start on the US plan this week, but it’s not sure when or if the idea will be voted on.

This is the first time the US has asked for a temporary break in fighting in Gaza at the UN. Before, the US said no to other proposals to stop the fighting.

The US plan also says that a big attack in Rafah could hurt more people and make them leave their homes, possibly going to Egypt.

It also says that doing this could cause big problems for peace and safety in the area.

The draft resolution asks for a temporary stop to the fighting in Gaza as soon as possible, like what President Joe Biden talked about with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week.

MrNetanyahu is not changing his plan even though other countries are asking him to. He promises to save the hostages and beat Hamas in Gaza.

Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli war cabinet, said they will attack Hamas unless they release all their hostages by March 10th. Ramadan starts today, it’s a special time for Muslims to fast and pray.

The Arab countries say the Security Council must listen to the international community and stop the fighting.
