An Israeli military official has acknowledged that the utilization of an inappropriate munition resulted in “extensive collateral damage” during the strikes on the Maghazi refugee camp on December 24.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry, the death toll from Israeli air strikes on the camp on Sunday has reached at least 86 people, as reported by the UN, and there is potential for that number to increase.

Speaking to public broadcaster Kan news, the Israeli military official stated that “the type of munition did not match the nature of the attack, causing extensive collateral damage that could have been avoided.”

The incident is currently undergoing further investigation to determine the exact circumstances.

In response to the report, the IDF informed the BBC that it “regrets the harm to uninvolved individuals and is working to draw lessons from the incident.”

The military clarified that its jets had targeted two locations near an area with Hamas operatives, but additional buildings were inadvertently hit during the strikes.
