Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has acknowledged casting a vote in the 2020 general elections even though his name did not appear in the voters’ register.
In an interview with Accra-based Neat FM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Ahiagbah revealed that despite possessing a valid voter identification card issued after his 2020 registration, his name was inexplicably absent from the voting list.
“I participated in the 2020 election. The Electoral Commission (EC) officials should be queried as to how I was allowed to vote despite my name’s absence from the register,” Ahiagbah stated in Twi during the interview.
He recounted arriving at his polling station on December 7, 2020, only to discover that his name was not listed in the register.
Despite this, he was permitted to vote after presenting his documents.
Ahiagbah’s disclosure follows accusations from members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding his alleged double registration attempt at a Ketu South electoral registration center on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
A video circulating online depicted a chaotic scene at the center, with NDC agents questioning Ahiagbah’s eligibility to vote in the 2020 election.
Subsequently, evidence emerged suggesting that Ahiagbah indeed voted in 2020, though his name was manually added to the voter roll on the election day.
Responding to these events, the NDC called for Ahiagbah’s immediate arrest, citing double registration as the offense.
Malik Basintale, the NDC’s Deputy National Communication Officer, urged the Ghana Police Service to take action or face a potential citizen’s arrest.
“We will not permit the NPP’s illicit methods to undermine the 7 December election results. We possess the challenge form and call for his prompt arrest. Failing police action, we will take matters into our hands to safeguard the people’s will,” Basintale asserted during an interview with Metro TV’s Michael Addo on News Night.
