Former National Security Advisor Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (RTD) has expressed his disillusionment with the current state of Ghana and President Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
Speaking on TV3’s “Hot Issues” with Kemmini Amanor, the former Chief of Defence Staff lamented the economic hardships and lack of development in the country, which he described as a “mess.”
“The Akufo-Addo I believed in, in 1998 isn’t the same person today,” Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah stated. He conveyed deep disappointment in the trajectory of the nation under the leadership of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the two dominant parties in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Nunoo-Mensah criticized the current administration for failing to deliver on its promises and improve the country’s economic situation.
“The country is in a mess,” he said, highlighting the pervasive economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians. He expected Ghana to be in a much better place than it is today, expressing his dismay at the slow pace of development.
“I am a disappointed person. I thought Ghana would be a better place than we are today,” he admitted. According to Nunoo-Mensah, the primary role of elected officials should be to serve the interests of the people, not their own. “When you vote for parliamentarians and the president, we are voting for them to run Ghana for our benefit, not for their benefit.”
When asked about his perspective on contemporary politics, Nunoo-Mensah was candid in his response: “It is just to make money.” His remarks reflect a growing sentiment among many Ghanaians who feel that the political class has prioritized personal gain over national development.
