The Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in South Tongu District, Maxwell Zu-Cudjoe, has launched rigorous measures to crack down on unregulated sand-winning activities in the Tongu Districts of the Volta Region.
Sand winning from the Volta Lake has become a significant economic endeavor, particularly in the South, Central, and North Tongu districts.
However, acknowledging the potential adverse impacts on the environment, the EPA has prioritized the regulation and oversight of these activities.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Zu-Cudjoe emphasized the need to regulate these activities to mitigate any detrimental effects on the environment and water bodies.
He pointed out instances where residents, using trucks, have engaged in unregulated sand winning operations, disregarding proper documentation and adherence to regulations.
“We will ensure compliance with existing regulations and deter unauthorized sand winning operations through increased surveillance and enforcement measures,” he explained.
Taking decisive action, the EPA, in collaboration with various security agencies, has stepped up efforts to curb these unregulated activities.
Zu-Cudjoe issued a stern warning to residents involved in unregulated sand-winning activities, urging them to refrain from such practices and adhere to established regulations
. This will promote sustainable development while safeguarding the natural resources and well-being of communities in Tongu.
