Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has shared documents that suggest that the opposition party’s support for former Ejisu Member of Parliament, Kwame Owusu Aduomi, who is participating in the Ejisu by-election.
Kwame Owusu Aduomi left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to run as an independent candidate in the by-election happening today.
Prior to today’s election, the NPP accused Kwame Owusu Aduomi of being an NDC member and also receiving support from the party.
Kwame Owusu Aduomi refuted the allegation and noted that should the NDC support him, it could only mean they are impressed by the initiatives he took while serving as a legislator.
There was no evidence to prove the NPP’s claim until now.
Per the April 18th document shared by Mr Anyidoho with NDC’s logo and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party ordered its constituency leadership to provide the logistical assistance needed to enable him to win the by-election to fortify the party’s strength in the Ashanti Region, known to be the NPP’s stronghold.
“The National Leadership of the National Democratic Congress wishes to officially bring to your attention, our resolve to support Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, the former Member of Parliament of the Ejisu Constituency.
“Our decision is borne out of the series of meetings we have had with Mr. Aduomi on the subject of the NDC throwing our support behind him to run as an Independent Parliamentary Candidate in the upcoming by-election at the Ejisu Constituency.
“The ultimate aim is to see our Party’s strength in the Constituency and the Ashanti Region as a whole. As a former member of parliament for the area, the leadership is aware of his following, hence, partnering with him as our candidate in this election will reduce the fortunes of the NPP and make them unpopular, leading to the 2024 National Elections.
“You are by this letter, mandated to provide Mr. Aduomi all the logistical support he has requested,” portions of the statement read.
Ahead of the by-election to fill the seat left vacant by the late John Kumah, political messaging has intensified as the governing party presents Kwabena Boateng as its candidate.
Mr. Boateng will compete against five other candidates, including Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who parted ways with the governing party to run independently in the upcoming by-election.
He was reportedly provided 3 branded pickups, 30,000 A3 size posters, 20,000 A4 size flyers for commercial vehicles, cash support of GHC500,000 and 50 boys to aid his campaign.
The NDC is yet to comment on the matter.
