The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has refuted allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding missing laptops and biometric verification devices (BVDs).

In a press conference dated 21st May, the EC clarified that the details of the BVDs are confidential and not available to the public.

The EC further disclosed that any attempt to describe the missing laptops as BVD’s should not be taken seriously.

“We can’t make public BVDs, the information regarding our BVDs is exclusive to us only. Ignore any information making the rounds about missing laptops as BVDs,” the EC stated.

Previously, the Minority in Parliament had raised concerns on March 19 about seven BVDs allegedly being stolen, with Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson urging the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate.

The EC responded on March 20, asserting that none of its BVDs were missing.

Samuel Tettey, the Commissioner in charge of Operations at the EC, confirmed that only five laptops were missing but emphasized that they did not contain any sensitive information.

He assured the public that the security and integrity of the BVDs, and by extension the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections, remain intact.
