The Council of Zongo Chiefs have appealed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, to choose the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
During a special Quran Recitation & Prayers dedicated to Allah for the New Patriotic Party’s success on January 19, 2024, at Kantudu behind the Kumasi Central Mosque, following Magrib prayers, the Zongo chiefs fervently prayed for Dr. Bawumia to select Dr. Prempeh as his running mate, citing him as the ideal partner to guide Ghana to its next level starting in 2025.
Speaking on behalf of the prayer congregation after the Quran recitation, Chief of Frafra and President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs, Alhaji Musah, expressed their spiritual belief in Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Prempeh’s ability to lead Ghana forward.
Alhaji Musah expressed their desire for Dr. Bawumia to be inaugurated as President on January 7, 2025, with Dr. NAPO as his Vice President, believing that their efforts in the recitation would not be in vain.
Continuing, Alhaji Musah emphasized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as their brother, urging Dr. Bawumia, himself a Zongo boy, to select him, anticipating their joint efforts in propelling Ghana forward.
Political analysts view this endorsement and prayer by the Council of Zongo Chiefs as a confirmation of the Energy Minister’s national appeal. Dr. Prempeh, historically named after Asante Islamic Cleric Nana Poku, is commonly referred to as NAPO.
Dr. Prempeh’s advocacy for competence-based voting, fostering national cohesion and unity without unnecessary religious sentiments, is also acknowledged in the statement.
“It is our wish that Dr. Bawumia will be sworn-in as President come 7th January, 2025 with Dr. NAPO as his Vice President. I know that our toil tonight in this recitation will not be in vain”.
He continued “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is our brother and we ask Dr Bawumia who himself is a zongo boy to select him for them to take Ghana forward” he added
