AntiLGBTQ+bill: Speaker Bagbin’s reaction to President’s letter is retaliatory, unprofessional – Sister Derby

Ghanaian musician and activist Deborah Vanessa, popularly known as Sister Derby, has strongly criticized the recent actions taken by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, labelling them as retaliatory and unprofessional.

The controversy revolves around Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend the approval of ministerial nominees until the Supreme Court rules on a related case.

This suspension was announced on March 20, citing an interlocutory injunction filed by MP Dafeamekpor.

However, many have interpreted this move as retaliation from the President’s office.

It is said that the President had requested Parliament to hold off on sending the Anti-LGBT+ Bill for presidential assent, citing two injunction applications against the bill at the Supreme Court.

Expressing her discontent on Instagram on March 22, Sister Derby criticised the Speaker’s behaviour as “disrespectful,” likening it to a childish squabble.

She pointed out that crucial legislative matters beneficial to Ghana are being overshadowed by personal grievances.

“When he passed this hate bill that goes against the Constitution of Ghana, did our President disrespect him like this? Current Speaker of Parliament’s behaviour can be described as childish and petty; “you took my toy, so I’m also taking yours.”

“Disregarding a whole list of important issues to be discussed in Parliament, that will actually benefit Ghana,” she posted.

Sister Derby has been vocal about her opposition to the Anti-LGBT+ Bill, describing it along with other activists as barbaric and a violation of human rights.

The bill proposes jail terms ranging from six months to three years for those engaged in LGBT+ acts, with sponsors and promoters facing even harsher penalties.

President Akufo-Addo has put his decision on hold regarding the bill’s enactment, citing its constitutional challenge in the Supreme Court.

However, MPs retain the power to veto the President’s decision with a two-thirds majority, potentially making the bill enforceable regardless of the President’s stance.
