Carlo Ancelotti has assumed responsibility for Real Madrid’s loss in the derby against Atletico, although he continues to emphasise that their “defensive vulnerability” was the primary factor behind the defeat.
Real Madrid suffered a surprising defeat to Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Alvaro Morata scoring twice and Antoine Griezmann adding another goal, despite Toni Kroos’ long-range strike.
This defeat marked Real’s first loss of the season, and while Ancelotti is willing to shoulder the blame, he underscores that their “defensive fragility” was the key issue rather than any tactical shortcomings.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Ancelotti said: “We didn’t start well or defend well. When they went 2-0 up, they played the game they wanted to. Atleti did better than us in this sense.”
“I think the system was not a problem, but rather defensive fragility,
“We were not compact and they took advantage of it.”
“When the team doesn’t do what it has to do, it’s my responsibility. I shoulder that; it’s my fault.”
Real are back in action on Wednesday against Las Palmas in La Liga.
