Hearts of Oak fan collapses, dies during Homowo Peace Cup

A tragic incident occurred during the Homowo Peace Cup match on Sunday, August 12, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, resulting in the death of Accra Hearts of Oak fan William Nii Laryea.

Hearts of Oak faced Kpando Heart of Lions, a fellow Ghana Premier League team, in a match held to celebrate the Homowo festival.

During the first half, Laryea, who had reportedly been experiencing chest pains, collapsed suddenly.

Despite the medical team’s swift response, Laryea was transported to the nearest hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.

On the field, Kwadwo Obeng Jr. opened the scoring for Heart of Lions just three minutes into the match.

Hearts of Oak’s Mohammed Hussein later equalized, sending the game into a penalty shootout. Hearts of Oak eventually secured the 2024 Homowo Charity Cup with an 8-7 victory on penalties.

The sudden passing of William Nii Laryea has left the Hearts of Oak community in deep mourning.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak in a press release has expressed their condolence to the family of their ‘die-hard’ fan William Nii Laryea who passed during the Homowo Peace Cup.
