Caterers involved in the government’s school feeding programme in the Ashanti Region are on the verge of staging a protest due to the government’s failure to settle outstanding payments spanning three academic terms.

This development has left the caterers deeply disappointed and frustrated, as they disclosed that they have not received any payments from September 2023 to June 2024, despite repeated assurances.

The financial strain caused by this prolonged delay has severely affected the caterers’ operations, making it increasingly difficult for them to meet their financial obligations. Many are struggling to pay creditors who have now resorted to threatening legal action against them.

In response to the dire financial situation, the caterers have issued a stern ultimatum to the government, demanding that all outstanding payments be deposited into their accounts by the end of Wednesday, June 26.

They have emphasized the seriousness of their demands, warning of imminent protests if the government fails to meet their deadline.

Meanwhile, a recent study conducted by the education think tank, Africa Education Watch, has highlighted a critical need for a 200 percent increase in funding for the school feeding programme.

According to the Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, approximately GH¢3 billion is necessary to sustain and improve the programme, ensuring that school children receive nutritious meals that enhance both their nutritional intake and educational outcomes.

Mr. Asare emphasized that the delay in disbursing funds not only jeopardizes the livelihoods of the caterers but also poses a significant threat to the continuity and effectiveness of this essential educational initiative.
