Traders at Kumasi Central Market have issued a stern warning that they will move their goods and commodities to the unfinished market site if the construction firm does not remove all barricades around the area by May 19.

In a petition dated May 14, the traders expressed their disappointment with the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, accusing them of negligence and failure to complete the second phase of the Kumasi Central Market project.

The project has been stalled for over a year and a half due to the renegotiation of a loan agreement following Ghana’s decision to seek a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Frustrated with conducting business under unsuitable conditions, the traders feel abandoned by the NPP government, which they claim has ignored their repeated pleas. They have resolved to hold five consecutive days of demonstrations to demand the resumption of work on the project.

In their petition, the traders have given Contracta Construction Company Limited a seven-day ultimatum to remove all barricades around the project site, warning of consequences if their demand is not met.

They are also currently negotiating with the Ghana Police Service to obtain permission for their demonstration, as provided for under Article 21(1d) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
