17.5% of married men in Ghana have two or more partners – GSS report

2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey has brought to light that two in every 10 married Ghanaian men engage in extramarital relationships.

According to the survey, 17.5% of married men in Ghana have two or more partners outside of their marital relationship, and 18.4% have had sexual intercourse with individuals other than their wives.

Furthermore, the survey revealed that 18.7% of divorced, separated, or widowed men in Ghana have two or more partners, with 69.9% engaging in sexual intercourse with individuals who are not their wives.

In another aspect, the data indicates that approximately 10% of men aged 15–24 have two or more partners, and 35.2% have engaged in sexual activities with individuals other than their wives.

In a related finding, the report highlighted a concerning pattern, with 80% of females aged 15–24 having sex without condoms.

Interestingly, despite 79% of young women being aware that consistent condom use can reduce the risk of HIV, the survey points out that risky behaviour persists.

As of 2022, the Ghana AIDS Commission reported that females constitute two-thirds of new HIV infections in the country. Out of the total 16,574 new HIV infections recorded, females accounted for 10,927 cases, while males accounted for 5,647 cases.
