Following Ghana’s disheartening elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), defender Mohammed Salisu has issued a sincere apology to disappointed sports journalists.

The Black Stars, unable to clinch a crucial win, had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Mozambique, resulting in their premature exit from the tournament.

In the aftermath of the match, irate Ghanaians, including members of the media, voiced their dissatisfaction with the team’s performance. A widely circulated video captured Salisu engaged in a heated confrontation with journalists who had been critical of the players, even resorting to threats.

Several days after the incident, Mohammed Salisu, who has returned to his club Monaco in France, has released a heartfelt statement expressing remorse for his actions. The center-back conveyed profound regret for Ghana’s underwhelming performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and extended his apologies for the team’s overall lackluster showing in the tournament.

Salisu’s statement read, “It is with the deepest regret that I am writing to you about our disappointing campaign in the 2023 AFCON. As you all know, we went with the intention of bringing the Trophy home, but it was rather unfortunate that we were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage. We gave absolutely everything, but we were unable to secure the necessary wins to keep us in the tournament.”

Salisu continued by offering a sincere and unconditional apology to anyone he might have offended. He underscored the team’s dedication to coming back stronger in future competitions. The statement also expressed gratitude to the supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s coach, Chris Hughton, has been relieved of his duties by the Ghana Football Association (AFCON). A committee has been promptly established to actively seek a suitable replacement. The nation is now focused on rebuilding and reclaiming its footballing prowess in forthcoming tournaments.

Acknowledging the frustration felt by both players and fans, Salisu explained, “My actions towards the media were out of frustration. We went to the 2023 AFCON to win the trophy, but things didn’t go as planned. Everyone will bear me witness; the last game was unacceptable, so the fans have every right to criticize us but not to the extent of insult and threats.”
