A Kpando District Court has remanded Prosper Ayirebi, a 27-year-old Kente weaver, into prison custody over his alleged involvement in the murder of Margaret Mireku in Golokuati, Volta Region.
Ayirebi is accused of tying the victim with a rope and subjecting her to sexual abuse. The court has reserved Ayirebi’s plea, and he is set to reappear on March 18, 2024.
The prosecution, led by Detective Inspector Henry Doku, revealed that the complainant, Mawuse Afordofe, a trader and maternal sister to the deceased, had disclosed four months prior that Ayirebi had allegedly raped Margaret Mireku after entrusting her with his laundry.
The deceased, feeling embarrassed due to the age difference, did not report the incident to the police.
On January 11, 2024, witnesses discovered Margaret Mireku in her house with her feet securely tied with a rope. She disclosed that Ayirebi had forcibly had sex with her the previous night. Despite efforts to revive her, she passed away.
The police arrested Ayirebi, and a subsequent examination of the deceased’s body revealed no visible marks of violence but foaming at the mouth.
The body was taken to Kpando Margaret Marquart Catholic Hospital, where medical officers confirmed her death. A postmortem examination was conducted on January 12, 2024, and investigations are ongoing.
