A video has surfaced showing Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, assuring payment to volunteers at the 2023 African Games.
Recorded during a press briefing on March 4, 2024, Ussif discussed the expenses incurred for the games, including facility costs.
He also stated that volunteers would be supported, including provision of food and allowances.
“Allowance for volunteers. The volunteers for the games are going to be fed and given allowances,” Mustapha Ussif said although he didn’t state the amount.
Despite assurances from the Sports Minister, volunteers have yet to receive any allowances after the Games ended.
The volunteers’ demand for allowances has sparked conflicts with personnel from the Ghana Police Service.
However, the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has stated that there was no agreement to pay allowances to volunteers.
