Clash over voting perimeter interrupts special voting at Koforidua Police headquarters

A dispute at the Koforidua Police Headquarters disrupted the special voting exercise in the Eastern Region on Monday, with tensions flaring between party officials and security personnel.

Tijani Mikano, the New Juaben South Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), clashed with security officers after resisting instructions to leave the designated voting perimeter.

Mikano accused the Electoral Commission (EC) and security personnel of bias, claiming a New Patriotic Party (NPP) official was campaigning within the restricted area.

“The EC has given us a parameter in which we should distance ourselves from the voters, but the NPP is campaigning in the queue so I also decided to campaign with my team but the EC says it is not allowed. If it is not allowed, they should drive the others back so the voters can cast their vote…,” he explained the cause of the incident.

The incident escalated into a heated confrontation, attracting attention from voters, security personnel, and EC officials. Darlington Annan, the presiding officer, explained that the misunderstanding stemmed from Mikano’s belief that NPP agents were violating the voting perimeter.

“He [the NPP representative] was moving around and was asked to move from the queue because he was causing a nuisance to the voters so he was advised to leave the queue, but as he was going, the opponent thought he was interfering so they wanted to know what was happening and in the process, it escalated to a debate between them,” he narrated.

Eastern Region correspondent Kofi Siaw reported that it took the intervention of EC officials and police officers to defuse the situation. Both parties were spoken to and subsequently vacated the premises, allowing voting to continue peacefully.

Meanwhile, special voting in the Western Region has proceeded smoothly with minimal disruptions. Voting in both Eastern and Western Regions had initially been delayed due to a printing error on ballot papers, which necessitated reprinting by the EC.

Calm has since returned to the Koforidua Police Headquarters, with voting progressing without further incidents.

Police will maintain professionalism, impartiality in December polls – Dampare

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has reiterated that the Ghana Police Service will uphold neutrality and professionalism in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

He stressed that the police force is unbiased and will enforce the law without partiality.

In his remarks at the opening of a new, state-of-the-art police station in Akyem Muoso, Eastern Region, the IGP issued a clear warning to potential troublemakers, assuring that the police will not allow anyone or any group to jeopardize the country’s peace at any stage of the election process.

“The Ghana Police Service is for the country and its people. We do not belong to any side in the elections; we are here to serve the people and to protect you. So we will remain neutral and professional during the elections and beyond,” the IGP said.

However, he cautioned Ghanaians not to let themselves be manipulated into actions that could destabilize the country’s security.

“We all, as Ghanaians, have a role to play in ensuring the security of our country. Just as the police will play its role and responsibility in protecting the people and ensuring that everyone is safe, we call on everyone not to allow themselves to be used for violence or to create tension in your community.”

During the commissioning events, both the chiefs and residents of the communities expressed their gratitude to the police administration for its ongoing commitment to improving the image of the Police Service and strengthening the fight against crime across the nation.

I am not hiding – Barker-Vormawor to police

The convener of the Democracy Hub protest, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has denied allegations that he is hiding and has been declared wanted by the police.

He described these claims as “baseless and misleading.” On Sunday, September 22, multiple members of the Democracy Hub group were arrested during the protest.

Following this, the police announced a manhunt for Barker-Vormawor and others accused of lawlessness during the demonstration.

In a Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor stated that he has maintained “consistent communication with senior officers within the Police hierarchy regarding my whereabouts and availability.”

He also mentioned that his “legal team is prepared to cooperate and will contact the relevant authorities to clarify the necessary steps.”

“legal team stands ready to cooperate and will be in touch with the relevant authorities to ascertain the appropriate steps required.”

    Below is Barker-Vormawor’s statement.

RE: FALSE CLAIMS OF A MANHUNT – CLARIFICATION AND NEXT STEPS

It has come to my attention that the Ghana Police Service has issued press statements suggesting that they are on a manhunt for me, thereby creating the false impression that I am on the run. These claims are baseless and misleading, as I have been in consistent communication with senior officers within the Police hierarchy regarding my whereabouts and availability.

In light of these developments, I have instructed my lawyers to urgently engage with the Ghana Police Service to seek clarification on which specific police station or office they wish me to report to. My legal team stands ready to cooperate and will be in touch with the relevant authorities to ascertain the appropriate steps required.

I remain committed to the rule of law and to addressing any issues raised by the Police in accordance with due process. I expect that this engagement will provide clarity and prevent any further attempts to distort the truth.

The three all-male robbery gang members were killed as a result of the incident, which took place on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at around 0125.

According to a source with the Abor Police, the police were made aware of the seven alleged armed robbers who had surrounded the neighborhood in an apparent attempt to target a home in Tsive-Kpotame.

The source said the Police, armed with this tip-off, laid an ambush in the targeted vicinity, where the suspects were in the process of invading the self-contained apartment.

The suspects, after sensing danger, opened fire on the Police but were overpowered by the officers, leading to the killing of three of them.

A Police officer, whose name has been withheld, however, sustained some gunshot wounds and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Police retrieved some weapons, including a pump action gun, a locally manufactured pistol, and 30 rounds of AA ammunition.

Mr Emmanuel Tsifoanya, the assembly member for the area, who confirmed the incident to the GNA, appealed to the Police to apprehend the other perpetrators, who are currently on the run.

However, Superintendent Daniel Carlos Atongnab, the Abor District Police commander, when contacted by the GNA, remained tight-lipped on the incident.

A team of Police officers, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Andrews Boadu-Ekumah, the Volta Regional Police Commander, had since visited the area for further action.
