Former Spanish international and ex-Barcelona teammate of Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, has officially retired from international football. This decision comes in the wake of his move to Inter Miami during the summer transfer window.
The esteemed left-back has chosen to step away from representing La Roja, concluding an international career that saw him make 93 appearances and score nine goals.
His leadership was instrumental in Spain’s UEFA Nations League triumph earlier in 2023, and he was a vital part of the squad that clinched the European Championship in 2012, notably scoring in the final against Italy.
Following in the footsteps of Messi, Alba made the transition to Inter Miami during the summer, where he now shares the field with another former Barcelona captain, Sergio Busquets.
Alba has quickly become a pivotal figure in the squad, and after securing the League Cup, he’s on the cusp of winning the US Open Cup as The Herons have already secured their place in the final.
“At 34 years old, Jordi Alba puts an end to this great international career. From the Royal Spanish Football Federation, eternal gratitude for this brilliant path. Thanks, Jordi,” the Spanish football federation said in a statement.
Alba retires as a true Spain legend after having represented his country at three World Cups, three European Championships, the London Olympic Games and a Confederations Cup.
