NADMO to begin massive public education on possible earthquakes in Accra

Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO, Abu Ramadan says his outfit will in the wake of the recent earth tremor recorded in Accra begin a massive public education on how to prepare for possible earthquakes in the capital.

Mr Ramadan said the public education is ongoing but due to the recent earth tremor(moderate earthquakes) that happened on Saturday, NADMO will intensify the reach of their education.

“Starting next week, base on this last tremor, we as a coordinating agency are going to start a full massive education, the education is already going on but it is not on a larger scale so we are going to take it a little higher and make sure we start serious education,” he stated in an interview with Citi FM.

Parts of Accra namely; Weija, McCarthy Hill, Gbawe, Sowutuom, Old Kasoa Barrier, New Bortianor, Awoshie, Abelemkpe, Tabora, Achimota, Ablekuma, Kissiman, Westland, Laterbiokorshie and Legon experienced an earth tremor with a 3.9 magnitude on a Richter scale according to the Ghana Geological Survey Authority.

A senior official at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, Nicholas Opoku said the Survey Authority recorded 2.6 magnitude on the Richter scale on January 13, 2019, and 2.8 on February 25, 2019, with the third pointing to increased seismic activity within Accra.

“As for bigger earthquakes, one day it will come but as to when is always a problem that semiologist has not been able to unravel”.

President Akufo-Addo has also directed the National Security and the Ministry of Interior to come out with plans which will help minimise the impact of any possible earthquake in the country.
