Amateur boxing comes with too many rules – Freezy Macbones laments

Ghanaian boxer Seth Gyimah, known as Freezy Macbones, has expressed his view that the rules of amateur boxing constrained him compared to professional boxing, where the regulations are more lenient.

Freezy Macbones was a member of Ghana’s 12-man contingent that represented the country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Dakar in August.

Unfortunately, Macbones and the other eleven Ghanaian boxers failed to secure their spots at the Olympics after being eliminated from the competition.

Freezy Macbones had an early exit when he was defeated by Senegal’s Seydou Konate in a middleweight (80kg) round of 32 bouts.

The British-Ghanaian boxer explained that professional boxing allows for more freedom in exhibiting various styles in the ring, whereas amateur boxing is more restrictive, a realm he had not previously ventured into.

“There is a whole lot of change moving from pro boxer back to amateur boxer. In a pro fight, nobody cares what you’re going to do. You can slip or even do your dance. But being an amateur is different and there are so many rules to follow”, he told Code Mickey in an interview.

“Believe me or not, I won the fight. I won the first round and second round. In the third round, guess what happened? They took a point from me because I used the pro-style”, he added.

On the other hand, the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has announced that Freezy Macbones will need to secure his spot in the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers in Thailand and Italy by facing local boxers in competition.

Seth Gyimah, who boasts a record of two victories in two bouts since his professional debut against Christopher Wood in February 2023, will need to earn his place through this route.
