You will hand over if the people decide they no longer want you – Speaker to gov’t elected officials

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a firm reminder to government officials who may be contemplating holding onto power beyond their term.

He emphasized that the Ghanaian Constitution unequivocally places power in the hands of the people, and their decision at the polls must be respected by all.

During an engagement with journalists in Tamale, Speaker Bagbin made it clear that those who express intentions to disregard the election results and cling to power will have no option but to step down if the people choose otherwise.

“Those who make utterances that they won’t hand over power will have no choice but to do so because the Constitution says so, and the power is with the people,” he stated emphatically.

The Speaker’s comments came in response to questions from journalists during a session with the Northern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

The discussion focused on Parliament’s role in ensuring peaceful elections and addressing legislative challenges ahead of the December elections. Speaker Bagbin assured the journalists that Parliament is fully committed to supporting a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

This engagement with the GJA was part of a broader initiative, preceding a public lecture organized by the Office of the Speaker to commemorate 30 years of Ghana’s Parliament and the country’s democratic journey.

During his address, Speaker Bagbin also touched on the complexities involved in passing significant legislation, such as the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill.

He highlighted the extensive scrutiny, stakeholder consultations, and budgetary considerations that accompany the passage of such bills, underscoring the importance of considering diverse perspectives in the legislative process.

In his remarks, Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, the Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, praised Speaker Bagbin for his unwavering support for press freedom and his commitment to ensuring that journalists can carry out their duties without fear. He also urged journalists to prioritize the country’s peace and contribute to a peaceful electoral process by reporting responsibly.

The Speaker’s comments come at a time when concerns have been raised by various individuals and groups, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and civil society organizations, about veiled threats from certain members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to retain power at all costs.

Notably, Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong has made several public statements suggesting the government’s determination to remain in power after the 2024 general elections.
