Two siblings, believed to be mentally unstable, are currently in police custody after allegedly setting fire to their house in Abuakwa Manhyia, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti region.
Tragically, their actions resulted in the death of their mother.
According to the Assembly Member for the area, the brothers had a confrontation with their grandmother, who also resides in the house, and threatened to set her ablaze.
Fearing for her safety, the grandmother promptly reported the threat to the police and evacuated the premises.
During her absence, the siblings set the house on fire, unaware that their sick mother was still inside, leading to her untimely demise.
The fire engulfed the entire house before firefighters could extinguish it, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. The victim’s charred remains have been transported to the morgue as investigations into the incident continue.
Recounting the harrowing ordeal to Citi News, Evans Opoku, the Assembly Member for the Abuakwa-Manhyia Electoral Area, described the incident as intentional, stating, “It was intentional, he was trying to burn the house and he wanted to kill his grandmother but the grandmother rushed to the police station to report the guy that the guy has threatened to kill her.”
“So, what he was doing was to burn the house and the grandmother too. Not knowing that the grandmother had left. So, before they realised someone was burnt it was the guy’s mother.
“They were two so the police arrested them. The police said that the two people caused the incident, so they arrested them yesterday.”
