Ghanaian filmmaker and Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission, Socrates Safo, has voiced strong criticism against former president John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of failing to fulfil promises made during his tenure.
Safo specifically highlighted Mahama’s commitment to build a theatre in Kumasi after securing funding from Exim bank, which ultimately remained unfulfilled.
Safo expressed his disappointment, asserting, “I will not follow somebody who promised to do something and he will not do it.”
He recounted Mahama’s pledge in 2013 to construct a theatre in Kumasi with funding from Turkish Exim Bank, emphasising that despite waiting patiently, nothing materialised.
Drawing a comparative analysis, Safo contrasted the performance of the Mahama administration with that of the Akufo-Addo led government, asserting that the latter successfully delivered on their promises.
He urged Ghanaians to prioritise tangible proof when evaluating political statements, citing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for making empty promises while commending the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their commitment to fulfilling pledges.
Safo concluded by advocating for support towards those who have demonstrated a track record of action, emphasising, “NPP came and they promised to build theatres, and they pursued it and secured funding and everything, and I can see they are doing it. NDC promised; we didn’t see anything, but NPP is delivering on the promise. If I am to put my weight, I will put my weight on the person who has done something.”
It will be recalled that John Dramani Mahama promised to build a second theatre in Kumasi after having successfully secured funds from the Turkish Exim Bank.
However, it is not known whether John Mahama started the project or did not commence it at all.
The former president is yet to respond to Socrate Safo’s claims.
