President Akufo-Addo has strongly denounced the recent assassination attempt targeting Donald Trump, former President of the United States and current Republican nominee for the upcoming 2024 elections.
In a statement released on social media on July 15, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that such acts of political violence have no place in any democratic society.
He also conveyed his best wishes for Trump’s recovery and prayed for his swift return to health.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I condemn in the strongest terms the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Such acts of politically-motivated violence have no place in our world, and undermine the principles of democracy and peace that we all hold dear.
“We send our heartfelt best wishes to President Trump and the American people during this difficult time, and we pray for his swift and complete recovery,” parts of Akufo-Addo’s statement read.
During a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
As he addressed a sizable crowd of supporters, gunfire erupted, sparking panic and disorder. Quick to react, Secret Service agents shielded Trump and safely removed him from the stage.
Reports indicated that Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the ear. The assailant, firing from an elevated position outside the venue, was swiftly neutralized by Secret Service agents.
Regrettably, one bystander lost their life, and two others sustained critical injuries in the chaotic incident.
Following the incident, Donald Trump was reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment at a local facility.
The FBI has taken charge of the investigation, classifying the incident as an assassination attempt.
The shooter has been preliminarily identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old who fired from a rooftop adjacent to the rally venue.
Authorities are actively investigating the motives behind the attack and any possible links the shooter may have had.
