An official statement from the Office of The President has clarified the reasons behind the blockade of Black Star Square, despite a pre-planned and paid-for event scheduled at the venue.

Dated January 7, 2024, and signed by H.M. Wood, the Chief Director, the statement explained that the decision was prompted by an “unforeseen State Event scheduled to take place at the venue.” Additionally, it mentioned that the booking fee of 10,000 Ghana cedis would be refunded to the unidentified organiser of the affected program.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of January 7, 2024, created a buzz on social media. Rumours suggested that the event, possibly unveiling the leader of The New Force political movement, was interrupted by National Security operatives and officials from the Ghana Police Service.

Over the last week, flyers and billboards in some parts of Accra advertised an event dubbed “The Convention.”

The event hosted a lineup of distinguished guests, including former Nigerian presidential aspirant Peter Obi, President of the Economic Freedom Fighters of South Africa Julius Malema, one-time Director of the Kenya School of Law P.L.O. Lumumba, and former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States Arikana Chihombori-Quao. Additionally, renowned musicians Efya, Stonebwoy, and Wiyaala were slated to deliver performances at the gathering.

Earlier on Sunday, social media buzzed with videos showcasing the event preparations, sparking speculations about the unveiling of The “Man Behind the Mask.” However, by 6 pm, reports from GHOne’s Twitter handle revealed that the organisers had been compelled to cancel the event.

Helicopters, suspected to be operated by National Security operatives, were reportedly spotted flying around the venue. Additional videos circulating on social media and observed by GhanaWeb depicted numerous supporters, who were supposed to attend, being barred from entering the premises.

There were also claims on Twitter that special guests and artists scheduled for the event were directed to return to their respective hotels by officials from the Ghana Police Service and National Security.
