Ghana’s progress in forest restoration has been emphasized by President Akufo-Addo.
Since 2016, the government has established over one million hectares of forest plantations, enrichment planting, and native tree seedling projects, creating rural employment opportunities and bolstering food security through agroforestry initiatives.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted on Facebook that the Green Ghana Day Initiative, launched in 2021, has led to the planting of more than 52 million trees within four years, with widespread participation from citizens, schools, and the private sector.
Acknowledging these achievements, President Akufo-Addo underscored the ongoing need for increased and dedicated financing to sustain these efforts.
He emphasized the global importance of tropical forests, which house nearly half of the world’s forested areas, calling for pooled resources and incentives to engage local communities in forest protection.
Emphasizing a balance between environmental stewardship and development, he reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to leading in forest conservation and restoration for a sustainable future.
Speaking at the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation in Brazzaville on July 5, 2024, President Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to implement sustainable forest management policies, combat illegal activities, and support forest-dependent communities.
He stressed the importance of investing in research and technology to enhance understanding of forest dynamics, essential for advancing reforestation efforts.
In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo reiterated on Facebook the critical ecological, economic, and cultural roles that forests play in Africa’s landscape, emphasizing the imperative to protect and restore these invaluable natural resources for future generations.
“We need increased and dedicated financing to sustain our efforts. The tropical domain, home to nearly half of the world’s forests, cannot fund the required $393 billion annually alone.
“We must pool resources and incentivize local communities to protect forests. Let us think globally but act locally, prioritizing environmental stewardship alongside development. Ghana remains committed to leading in forest conservation and restoration, thus helping to ensure a sustainable future for all,” he said.
