At a recent Town Hall meeting hosted by the National Democratic Congress, renowned skit maker SDK expressed his frustration with the severe challenges faced by content creators in Ghana.
He highlighted the dramatic increase in internet data costs and persistently slow connectivity as major hurdles impacting their work.
SDK, who has been deeply affected by these issues, shared how the skyrocketing data prices have made content creation increasingly expensive.
Despite the high costs, the internet speed remains sluggish, hampering their ability to produce and upload content efficiently.
Speaking at the event, SDK explained, “As a fellow content creator, I can attest to the challenges my colleague mentioned. The problem isn’t just the expense but also the subpar speed of the internet. It’s becoming nearly impossible to keep up with the demands of our work.”
He went on to describe how the difficulties with internet access led him to pivot away from acting and skit production.
“I used to rely on acting for my livelihood, but with these internet issues and costs, I had to change direction and start helping myself by taking up other opportunities, like sampling different foods,” he said.
SDK called on presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama to address the high cost of internet access if re-elected, urging him to take action to make the internet more affordable and accessible.
In response, Mahama assured SDK and others present that he would work towards creating a more competitive telecommunications market.
He promised to introduce measures to prevent any single provider from dominating the market, thereby fostering fair competition and better internet services.
