A delegation of market queens from Kumasi, operating within the stronghold of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), voiced their distress over the rising costs of doing business during a meeting with former First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The traders cited a decline in working capital attributed to the constant depreciation of the Ghana cedi against other currencies.
The meeting, initiated by the market queens, addressed various issues, with a focus on the necessity for additional market infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.
Expressing her empathy, Lordina Mahama, who has over 30 years of experience as a market woman, acknowledged the challenges faced by the traders.
“I am one of you. I have been a market woman for over 30 years, so I know what you are going through,”Lordina Mahama stated.
She affirmed her commitment to supporting them, irrespective of their political affiliations, emphasising her understanding of their vital role in the economy.
“My doors are always open. My love for you and what you do is not based on who you vote for. I will continue to love you and support you in any way I can,” she stated.
Lordina Mahama assured the market queens that her doors are always open and pledged ongoing support in any way possible.
Additionally, Mahama, a representative of the NDC, promised the delegation that the next administration, led by John Mahama, would prioritise the needs and concerns of market women nationwide.
She revealed plans outlined in the NDC’s 2020 manifesto to construct more markets in all regions.
As the meeting concluded, Mahama extended congratulations to all women on International Women’s Day, acknowledging their relentless efforts in making the world a better place.
