On January 22, 2023, the Kumasi Traditional Council convened to address an alleged case of severe disrespect towards the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The accused party in this matter was Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who holds the position of Ashanti Regional Chairman within the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Chairman Wontumi faced accusations of threatening to challenge Otumfuo’s authority.
During the session, the NPP’s leadership, led by General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah, requested a two-week extension from the meeting date for Chairman Wontumi to appear, citing health reasons.
However, the Council, presided over by the Bantamahene, rejected the justification after various chiefs had expressed their perspectives on the issue. The Council strongly rebuked Chairman Wontumi, his media outlet, and the NPP.
Ultimately, the Council mandated the party to produce Chairman Wontumi within seven days.
Additionally, the Council called for the presence of Maurice Ampaw and the management of Wontumi Media regarding the lawyer’s statements concerning the matter involving their owner.
Maurice Ampaw had previously criticized the chiefs, referring to them as rogue elements while asserting that they were attempting to censure Wontumi, the station’s owner. The full session of the Council meeting can be viewed below.
