In a disturbing incident at Eryaman Stadium, a Turkish Super Lig referee, Halil Umut Meler, was physically assaulted by Ankaragucu’s president, Faruk Koca.

The attack occurred after Ankaragucu conceded a last-minute equaliser in a 1-1 Super Lig draw with Rizespor on Monday. Following the goal, Koca stormed onto the pitch and punched Meler, knocking him to the ground.

According to BeIN Sports, the Turkey Football Federation has called for an extraordinary meeting in response to the appalling incident involving Ankaragucu’s President Koca physically assaulting referee Halil Umut Meler.

Swift and stringent punishments are anticipated as a consequence of this regrettable event.

Turkey President Recep Erdogan said about this incident: “I condemn the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler after the MKE Ankaragucu-Çaykur Rizespor match played this evening, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

“Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence. We will never allow violence to take place in Turkish sports.”

At 37 years old, Meler is among Turkey’s premier referees, overseeing international matches for FIFA and holding a position on UEFA’s elite official list. In the aftermath of the incident, President Koca is expected to face repercussions in the near future.
