Renowned Ghanaian rap legend, Reggie Rockstone, has recently shed light on widespread corruption within the country’s music industry.
During a discussion on Property FM, Rockstone expressed apprehension about the authenticity of streaming numbers, asserting that some artists resort to purchasing online streams to artificially boost their popularity.
Rockstone raised concerns about the integrity of the music scene, asserting, “The huge number of streams some musicians get are sometimes not genuine because they have streaming farms. The corruption that has infiltrated into music nowadays is a whole topic for another day that we need to discuss.”
The hiplife icon went on to reveal his observations regarding the profit distribution on popular digital streaming platforms such as Spotify.
According to Rockstone, creators and innovators of these platforms, mostly individuals from other parts of the world, are reaping significant financial benefits at the expense of Ghanaian musicians.
He emphasised that the revenue generated primarily benefits those who implemented the platforms, asserting, “The white people are really enjoying our money out of the digital streaming platforms they’ve created like Spotify and the rest. They’re really spending our money, and they always find a new way to rip, so we have a lot of things that we have to look at.”
In essence, Reggie Rockstone’s revelations shine a spotlight on alleged corruption within the Ghanaian music industry, particularly the questionable practices surrounding online streaming numbers and the unequal distribution of revenue on digital platforms.
