Spend smart, “otherwise the money doesn’t work” – Ten Hag jabs Chelsea owners

Erik ten Hag has cautioned the prospective owners of Manchester United about the potential pitfalls of repeating the mistakes made by Chelsea during their ownership transition last summer.

At present, Manchester United is engaged in discussions regarding a possible takeover with their current owners, the Glazer family, who are considering options to either sell the entire club or share control.

The Americans have been under immense pressure from the fans to cede ownership of the club.

Anti-Glazer protests have been a common sight in recent seasons, with many feeling United has stalled in terms of development, as reported by ESPN.

But with new owners comes the risk of clubs losing sight of the bigger picture – if what has happened at Chelsea this season is anything to go by.

Chelsea’s lacklustre season

Chelsea’s long-time owner, Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club after Russia invaded Ukraine early last year. Todd Boehly’s Clearlake consortium won the bid to buy the club.

The American arrived with much promise, picking up from where the oligarch had left off and immediately pumping money into new signings.

However, the club overspent on some players, leaving them exposed in some areas, with the lack of strategy becoming clear as the season progressed.

The Blues are set to record their worst-ever finish in 29 years. Ten Hag is aware and concerned about such a scenario repeating itself in the Northwest.

“You have to do the right things. You can have money but have to spend it in a smart way, and you need to have a strategy behind it – otherwise, the money doesn’t work.

We are now in a good direction – but we can also learn from this season,” the Dutch manager said, as quoted by the Sun.

Ten Hag was speaking ahead of his side’s game against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

The Red Devils would go on to secure a point against Frank Lampard’s beleaguered Blues and secure their spot in Champions League football next season.

Antony goes off injured

In that game, United raced to a 2-0 lead before the break, but winger, Antony was stretched off with a serious-looking injury.

Sports Brief reported the Brazilian came into contact with defender, Trevoh Chalobah and was left screaming in utter agony.
