Lionel Messi’s return to Barcelona on a stunning loan transfer is not on the cards, as the club reportedly has different priorities for the upcoming January window.
While there have been discussions about the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner potentially reuniting with Barcelona, it seems the club has ruled out such a move.
One of the reasons for this decision is that Messi’s current team, Inter Miami, will not be participating in the MLS playoffs. With their postseason hopes dashed, Messi’s debut season in the United States will conclude on October 21.
Following this, he will be engaged in World Cup qualifiers with the Argentina national team in November. However, a significant break awaits him until the 2024 season begins in the United States.
There had been speculation that Messi might seek more competitive action by returning to Europe on a short-term loan. However, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo, no agreement will be reached with Barcelona.
This is due to Barcelona operating on a tight budget, and even if Messi were to accept a reduced salary, La Liga regulations would still calculate his wage to be much higher, as seen with the case of Joao Felix’s summer signing.
Furthermore, Barcelona is focused on registering Vitor Roque in January, an 18-year-old Brazilian forward for whom they have already arranged a deal with Athletico Paranaense.
As a result, there has been no consideration given to signing Messi.
Consequently, Messi is expected to resume pre-season training with Inter Miami in January.
The David Beckham co-owned team may also look to arrange a series of friendly matches during the winter period.
