Manchester United reportedly knew about Leny Yoro’s potential metatarsal issues during his medical examination but proceeded with the transfer anyway.
The club finalized the acquisition of Yoro this summer for a fee of £52 million ($68 million).
However, the French defender sustained a metatarsal injury during a friendly against Arsenal and is expected to be out for nearly three months following surgery.
According to The Athletic, United discovered the metatarsal problem during Yoro’s medical check-up before completing the deal.
Despite this, the Red Devils were determined to proceed with the transfer due to Yoro’s status as one of Europe’s top young talents.
United also wanted to finalize the transfer quickly to prevent Real Madrid from securing Yoro, despite the Spanish club offering Lille a lower fee.
Lille reportedly preferred United’s offer, which facilitated the move.
Fortunately for Erik ten Hag, who likely intended for Yoro to be a key player, United also signed Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.
De Ligt’s addition provides an alternative option for the starting position in defense.
