“I don’t think so” – Real Betis coach brushes off David de Gea links

Real Betis coach Mauricio Pellegrini has dismissed rumours suggesting that his club is set to acquire the services of free agent David de Gea.

In Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Sevilla, third-choice goalkeeper Fran Vieites took on the goalkeeping responsibilities, as regular keepers Rui Silva and Claudio Bravo were sidelined due to injuries.

Despite speculation reported by Sport indicating an advanced negotiation with the 33-year-old De Gea, who has been without a club since his contract with Manchester United concluded in June, Pellegrini has downplayed any imminent signing.

But, asked about the possibility the club could sign De Gea or another goalkeeper, Pellegrini said, “If you ask me, I would say I don’t think so.

“Vieites is a goalkeeper who has many abilities; he didn’t have the slightest responsibility for the goal; he was calm and for me, it was a very good performance of his given how difficult it is to practically debut in professional football with everything that the outside environment entails.”
